Many of us like to use our Notebook/Laptop computers as portable desktops, which means that we leave them on a lot, and give them hard use. This means that our notebooks can run hot, and heat means potential maintenance problems. My IT professional advised me that if you use a notebook computer the way many of us do, you need a notebook cooler. This is one of the coolers that he recommended, and after some on-line comparison shopping, this is the one I went with.
This unit seems to cool the notebook down considerably. Once fired up, the aluminum chassis is startlingly cool. Since most of the heat on a notebook is on the bottom, this should act as an effective heat sink, cooling the notebook. Or even more to the point, helping to preserve the life of the notebook's thermostatically-controlled fans by causing them to run less frequently.
Construction quality is first-rate. The fans are very quiet. The unit has nice rubber grips for your notebook preventing it from sliding. The cooler also has extendable feet which increase the angle of the notebook, thereby increasing air circulation beneath it. Most users will want to do this. I love the tilted angle that this provides the notebook, and it places the notebook screen at roughly the same height as a typical outboard flatscreen monitor. (I always operate with two monitors from my workstation so this was an unexpected extra.)
This cooler derives its power from the USB port. It compensates for this by providing one USB port. It would have been nice if it provided more than one, even if this meant the additional ports were unpowered, but no. It should be possible to power this cooler with an AC-to-USB adapter, but I have not done this.
My 17 inch HP G71 Notebook fits beautifully on this cooler. The bottom of the Notebook is nice and cool when used with this accessory, and I will never use a notebook at my workstation again without one of these. RJB.

After a couple of years balancing my laptop on my knees, on a lap desk pillow, or whatever.....this product came to my attention and seemed like the answer. The fans, extra USB, great appearance, and just the right angle are among the features that make it perfect to hold my laptop and make it much more convenient to use as I sit in my family room checking the weather, email, or paying my bills. Buy it...you'll like it.

I bought this shortly after I bought a 17" Toshiba Satellite laptop. Considering the reviews, I was pretty skeptical, but considering I've got a Core 2 Duo processor, I needed something that was pretty effective.
I set the Zalman up - took about a minute - and from the get go I could tell it was perfect. The size is ideal, it has ambidextrous USB ports for your computer to power it up, and it has a fan speed regulator dial.
Anyhow, at top speed it provides a bit of a whirring sound, but my laptop cooling fan won't kick on unless it's a pretty hot day.
It's great to finally have a seemingly tailor-made product for my laptop.

Finding a cooler for a 17" notebook is great. I've had this one for a few months now, and have had no problems. It runs very quietly off a USB port. There is a blue LED light that lets you know that it is on, a nice feature as I have it plugged into a powered hub and need to turn it on and off each time. I can feel the fans working, even at low speed, there is also a fan speed controller. So far about mid-speed is all I've needed. Although it props up the computer about an inch and a half at the rear, sloping to about 1/4 " at the front, the computer actually seems easier to type on than being flat on the desk. Stability is great, there are rubber pads that hold the computer and on the bottom to prevent slipping.
I marked it down for portability, although it would fit in my case it would be a bit bulky to actually lug around, but given the rugged construction and size I don't know if anything smaller could be made with the same quality.

So quiet I sometimes wonder if it's working. Then, I feel the coolness and know it is! Great product!
