I've been using laptops for 15 years and have always understood the importance air flow when cooling. This is easier to do a normal desktop PC where you place an intake fan in the front, and an exhaust fan in the rear. A laptop is different - generally, modern laptops will "intake" air from vents located underneath the machine, and will exhaust the air from the sides. A good cooling solution is not only one that shoots moderately cool air up at the laptop from the fans, but one that directs the cool air correctly into the laptop.
Why other laptop coolers aren't as effective as the Zalman ZM-NC2000 - they blow air (albeit cool as well) directly from the fan iteself - into the laptop. These fans are located directly below the laptop, meaning that the laptop is only receiving air, in a funnel size of the fan itself, leaving "hotspots" under the laptop.
The Zalman cooler has its' fans located at the back and under of the cooler. The fans suck in the cold air, and the interior design of the cooler distributes all of the air evenly through ALL of the perforated holes on this cooler. Thus eliminating the problem of "hotspots" very common with almost all other laptop coolers.
I do HEAVY multi-tasking that pushes the CPU/Graphics on my laptop to it's limits. I run Adobe After Effects, Sony Vegas, and Cinema 4D all at the same time. I've also overclocked the CPU and increased the onboard RAM from 4GB's to 8GB's. With that said - without the cooler, this thing ran extremely hot with all my content creation software open. It got to a point where the right side (where the GPU is situated) of my laptop was almost too hot to touch, and this was when I was using a thermaltake cooler.
Once I purchased the Zalman ZM-NC2000, my laptop ran EXTREMELY more reliable and faster. Works well and the noise is minimal. My internal laptop fan rarely has to kick into high gear when I use this product so I'm very pleased with my purchase. If you want to lug this around everywhere with you you'll need a fairly large bag, it wouldn't fit in my backpack.
